Free Responses:

When our tutors were asked the following questions, this is how they responded:

    Hobbies:
Reading, music, theatre, martial arts, shopping, athletics, cooking and the beach. I also love to write, but I wouldn't consider it a hobby.

Why do you want to be a tutor?
I've helped my friends understand homework since grade school and I continued to do so even at the post-grad level at college. It seems that I have the ability to translate what the teacher said into things that other people could understand. This ability made me a successful college professor and substitute k-12 teacher. I really like education and being able to help people that need it. Tutoring allows me to work with someone one-on-one and really connect.

Why should a student pick you?
I smiled while I read the question, 'Why should a student pick you?' Most tutor agencies ask why a parent should pick a potential tutor and most tutor agencies miss the point of tutoring. This is why I really like working for Vegas Tutors and the clientele reflects this as well. Knowing that the student comes first is important to me. Yes, the parents pay and are instrumental in selecting a tutor, but it all comes down to if the student and the tutor can really work together. I've been in education for a significant portion of my life and I know the frustration of having someone that just does not want to connect to the student. We are people--people are social--we learn things through connections. When an educator forgets that basic fact then learning becomes a chore. A student should pick me because they feel I am right for them. Being 'right' for a student increases the ability for a tutor to teach.

    Personal Statement:
My love for education comes from my family. My aunt is an educator and she made learning fun and is a strong influence on my life, but my father is probably the reason I teach. He came to the US after his family was liberated from the camps in WWII. He is a smart man, but not speaking the language here made learning hard for him. The teachers made him feel inferior and refused to help him learn the material or language. I believe everyone has the right to know they are able to learn, that they can do something and get help understanding a concept when they need it. They don't have to think they are un-teachable or poor in an aspect because one person couldn't reach them. If you are working on a project and one tool doesn't fit, do you keep trying the same tool or do you reach for the proper one? Does it make sense that something as simple as putting a Ikea desk together takes various proper tools, but somehow education only requires a hammer?

    Any Last Words?
I became an educator because I was upset at the way I saw classrooms, both high school and college, were still conducted. I figured I couldn't complain if I didn't try to do anything about it, so I started to tutor. Tutoring became teaching and teaching allowed me to see the best way to really teach someone is through a tutoring session. A chemical reaction can only go as fast as its slowest component. With tutoring we can spend all the time that component needs so that it may fulfill its potential.
